IL PARCO NAZIONALE DEL CIRCEO – COMUNI DI SABAUDIA, SAN FELICE CIRCEO, LATINA, PONZA (ISOLA DI ZANNONE).
Torna all'elenco

Along the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Lazio, approx. 100 km south of Rome, one finds the National Park of Circeo, which, with its 8,500 hectares of surface area, characterises and enhances the entire Pontine plains. It was set up back in 1934, when the institutive Law of the National Park of Circeo saved part of the “Selva di Terracina” (Terracina Wood), today’s Park Forest. This occurred jointly and in opposition to the “integral” logic of the Reclamation of the Agro Pontino of the’30s that provided for drainage, deforestation and division into farms. The Wood, together with the Promontory of Circeo, the Lago di Paola and Coastal Dunes, forms the first nucleus; added, thereafter, were the coastal lakes of Caprolace, Monaci and Fogliano, and the island of Zannone. A treasured “archipelago of environmental islands”, abounding with relevant vegetation and fauna, “cultural islands” composed of numerous finds from every era that testify - beyond the myth linking Circeo to the Homeric legend of Ulysses and the enchantress, Circe - to the presence of prehistoric populations, among whom were: the Neanderthal Man, human settlements from yesterday and today (the cities of Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo and part of the territory of Latina; the archaeological sites of the Casarina, Sorresca and Villa di Domiziano; the Village and Villa of Fogliano; remains of the Benedictine Monastery on the Island of Zannone); the Park Forest (Circe Wood), extending across 3,260 hectares and the only natural flatland forest in Italy, with its periodically flooded “pools”; the Promontory of Circeo, the only high point in the Park, with the slopes of Quarto Caldo and Quarto Freddo; the Dunes, thin strips of sand bordering the sea with its typical vegetation of common juniper and brilliant floral blooms. The various natural spaces of the Park and structures for visitors can be used at any time without charge, except for some areas off-limits: Natural Reserves (entrance prohibited or limited) and Naturalistic Museum in the Visitors’ Centre (entrance fee). Available at the Visitors’ Centre, located in Sabaudia, are: an Information Office, Naturalistic Library, Audiovisual Room and Auditorium, routes equipped with information panels and reconstruction of the areas prior to the reclamation and a picnic area. Other equipped centres are: the Village of Villa Fogliano (environmental education workshop on wet zones and ornithological museum, natural path in the botanical garden, also equipped for the blind and visually impaired, picnic area); in Cerasella, in the heart of the “Selva di Circe” (enclosure for fauna and picnic area); in Lestra Cocuzza (Documentation Centre concerning Health and Education in the Pontine Swamp); on the island of Zannone, reached privately or with guided tours.
