MONUMENTO NATURALE MONTE SANT'ANGELO E TEMPIO DI GIOVE ANXUR - TERRACINA

Monte S. Angelo, rising approx. 270 metres in height on the coast of Terracina, and its temple dedicated to young Jupiter became Natural Monuments in 2000. Extending across approx. 23 hectares, the monument includes a Site of Community Interest (SCI) covering approx. 16 ha.; alongside strictly naturalistic values, it also has aspects of historic and archaeological interest. The most well-known and evident one is the aforementioned Temple of Jupiter Anxur, a massive building, with the longest side, ca. 60 m., facing southwest and twelve large arches of substructure, built during the Scyllan era; still quite visible in the same area are the ruins of the wall, probably built in late-Republican times. During the Middle Ages, a Benedictine monastery, dedicated to the worship of San Michele Arcangelo, to whom one owes the “new” name attributed to Monte Nettunio, was established in the current archaeological zone. The main features of the Monument, as regards the flora-fauna aspect, are to be sought in the threatened and vulnerable species that are included in the list of the Habitat Directive. As a result of climatic conditions, the arid, rocky soil and numerous fires that have affected it, 25% of the vegetation is composed of “Thermo-Mediterranean and pre-desert shrubs” and 50% of garigue. Among the plant species noted, we recall the Centaurea cineraria (dusty miller) or cliff fleur-de-lis, dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis), the rare perennial fern, Phyllitis sagittata, tree germander (Teucrium fruticans), mother-of-thousands (Cymbalaria pilosa) and euphorbia (Euphorbia caracias). As regards fauna, the SCI boasts 8 species of birds listed in the Habitat Directive: among them, and especially representative, are the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), mountain swallow
(Ptyonoprogne rupestris) and raven (Corvus corax)
