PARCO REGIONALE RIVIERA DI ULISSE
Torna all'elenco

Incorporating the nature reserves of Monte Orlando (Gaeta), Gianola (Formia) and Monte di Scauri (Minturno) as well as Tiberius’ Villa and the coast between Torre Capovento and Punta Cetarola (Sperlonga), Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park stretches along the entire southern coast of the region of Lazio, an area which, in addition to offering breathtaking landscapes and marvellous views, also embraces a wide range of environmental features such as promontories, falaises, caves and seabeds teaming with life as well as rare examples of Mediterranean vegetation and endemisms (vegetation composed of species found only in a specific place). Covering over 434 hectares of land and 80 hectares of sea, Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park is home to a large number of sites of great historical, archeological and environmental importance, sites which testify the complexity of the interaction between man and nature. Monte Orlando Nature Reserve Monte Orlando nature reserve covers 89 hectares (59 hectares of land and 30 hectares of sea) of the municipality of Gaeta at the end of the Monti Aurunci mountain range. The presence of numerous Roman ruins and buildings dating back to the Bourbon wars, as well as the magnificence of the Mediterranean scrub which entirely covers the slopes of the mountain, have convinced the Region of Latium to protect the area which has been an integral part of the Riviera di Ulisse Regional park since 1986. One of the most important archeological sites in the nature reserve is the Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus, a rare example of a perfectly conserved roman tomb. In addition to many opportunities for excursions, Monte Orlando Nature Reserve also offers unforgettable scuba diving activities, giving divers the chance to explore, in front of the cliff falling sheer to the beach, a seabed teaming with rare living species and extraordinary geological formations. Gianola and Monte di Scauri Nature Reserve Located in the extreme south of the region of Latium, Gianola and Monte di Scauri nature reserve covers a total of 309 hectares (292 hectares of land and 17 hectares of sea) of the municipalities of Formia and Minturno, while its position at the base of the southern ramifications of the Monti Aurunci mountain range means it enjoys a particularly mild Mediterranean climate and is thus pleasant to explore throughout the year. Although the hilly plateaus of this last promontory in the region of Latium lie at approximately 40 metres above sea level, the peak of Monte di Scauri stands at 123 metres above sea level. In addition to the delightful natural features of the rocky coast and the thick vegetation which covers the area, Gianola and Monte di Scauri nature reserve is also home to numerous Roman ruins. Indeed the area was originally the site of the Villa of Mamurra and it is easy to imagine the Roman nobleman enjoying his leisure time in this beautiful area of the Italian peninsula. Tiberius’ villa, Torre Capovento and Punta Cetarola Natural Monument Stretching over 116 hectares (83 hectares of land and 33 hectares of sea) of the municipality of Sperlonga, an area well known in Roman times for its delightful natural features, the coastal nature reserve stretches from Tiberius’ Villa, a natural monument located on the border of the municipalities of Itri and Gaeta, to the falaises of Punta Cetarola. The area also includes the seabed off the coast which is considered a marine nature reserve and thus protected by special regulations. Of particular archaeological interest are the ruins of Tiberius’ villa and the adjacent archaeological museum. Many important educational and recreational activities are organized in the marine nature reserve included guided dives, snorkeling expeditions, sea-watching excursions, aqua-video trips in boats with transparent bottoms (only in certain periods of the year), educational fishing workshops, natural rambles, study and research camps, coastal excursions and teaching activities for schools.
