COMUNE DI ROCCAMASSIMA

Standing atop a hill at 746 metres, this is the highest centre in the province of Latina. The road leading to this small town climbs around the cone of the hill to increasingly sweep-ing views of Velletri and the Pontine plain. The nearest peaks are Mt. Pratiglio (945 m.) and, on Roman provincial territory, Mt.Grugliano (1080 m.). The ilex and oak woods here are of excellent environmental value. The town is thought to have developed in the nearly 7th century a.C. on the ruins of Carventum and, as occurred for numerous other centres in the Monti Lepini, was at the centre of constant battles between the Volsci and the Romans. In the Middle Ages the Annibaldi family had a stronghold and defences built here (12th century). Later it belonged to the Conti, Salviati, Borghese and Doria Pamphili Landi families, before being destroyed by the Spanish in 1557. The major historic and monumental sights include the church of St.Michele Arcangelo and a 16th century convent with cloister. The cold climate, pungent air and tranquillity make it an ideal summer holiday resort.
